Sports By 5 is a sports management company based in Singapore that is dedicated to the highest quality of sports instructional programs. With extensive experience and network in the industry on and off court, Sports By 5 seeks to provide world-class sports instructional to all ages and levels in Singapore and the region. Led by founder and tennis professional Gary Tan, the company will also partner with the world’s largest tennis teachers certification body – Professional Tennis Registry to provide the highest standard of certification testing and continuing education to tennis teachers around the region.

With unequaled passion and experience in tennis and education, the company’s team of experienced coaches is able to offer and customize the most up-to-date interactive learning programs to help young children build motor skills, foster confidence and positive discipline.

Sports By 5 also have a highly trained in-house physiotherapist who can offer consultation services in injury prevention programs, sports rehabilitation and training. In addition, the company can conducts talks and workshops on sports first aid and injury management to our corporate clients, professional athletes as well as schools and tertiary institutions.

The Founder - Gary Tan

Gary began playing tennis at the age of 12 and was a successful junior. After a stellar career in junior tennis, Gary left Singapore to play US college tennis in 1992. He went on to achieve both All-American and Distinguished Academic All-American honors for outstanding achievements in tennis and academics, a record held only by two students in the history of the college. During his sophomore year, he put together a school record, 28-6 win-loss record and was nationally ranked No.6 in the NJCAA National Championships in both singles and doubles. After earning a scholarship, Gary transferred to Flagler College, St. Augustine, Florida, which competed in the NAIA. Playing on their starting lineup, he was voted "Most Improved Player" by his fellow teammates. Upon earning a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Economics, Gary returned to Singapore where he featured prominently in Davis Cup for the Singapore National Team. He was also a member of the 1997 Jakarta-bound South East Asia (SEA) Games squad.


Gary also had extensive experience working as a teaching professional at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina for two years working and training the elite World Class Training Program and working alongside tennis icon and PTR founder, Dennis Van Der Meer. He also traveled extensively with PTR Master Professional, Dr. Ludovit Cap, conducting workshops and tennis universities across many major cities in the United States. Currently, Gary is a PTR’s Southest Asian Director, International Tester and Clinician.


Gary was invited to join Singapore-based tennis management company, Savitar in June, 1999 and was appointed their Director of Tennis and Marketing Manager. His duties included managing all of its Adult and Junior Instructional Programs at the renowned Willow Stream Spa Tennis location at The Fairmont Singapore and the Marina Tennis Club. His strong marketing background also led to the creation of the Savitar and Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) website as well as the design of the latest ATF logo. In addition to his teaching and marketing duties, Gary is also responsible for the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) relationship as PTR Singapore’s course-coordinator. He has conducted and coordinated PTR Tennis Certification and Coaches Development courses in Singapore and Malaysia for the last nine years.


In March 2008, Gary left Savitar to form Sports By 5.
