In order to become certified by the PTR, you must successfully
complete a written examination and four on-court examinations. Sports by 5/PTR offers the Teaching Essentials certification Workshop annually where an applicant can sit for the 5-part certification after attending the 10-hour long course. This workshop is the industry leader in Group Instruction. At the conclusion of the workshop, PTR certification testing is offered.
For more information on 2010 workshops, please call Gary @ 9685-1765 or email: ptr-seasia@sportsby5.com.
The written exam, which is available in Arabic, Bulgarian, Croatian, Chinese, English, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovenian, Slovak, Spanish, Thai and Yugoslavian, tests an applicant’s knowledge of a standard method of instructing. Game tactics and strategy are also covered.
The on-court tests examine an applicant’s ability to demonstrate all the strokes, well as their ability to conduct a class in a real teaching situation.
- In the Skills Test, bio-mechanically sound stroke production, spin, and placement must be demonstrated.
- In the Teaching Test, an applicant must teach a 30-minute group lesson using a standardized format.
- In the Error Detection/Corrective Techniques Test, an applicant must identify common stroke errors and provide proper corrective techniques.
- In the Drill Test, you must demonstrate ball-handling skills in a drill situation.
Test results are mailed out to participants from the PTR International Headquarters within 30 days after completion of your test. Test results are not given out over the phone. If an applicant passes the certification test, a signed certificate with the applicant’s certification rating will be included in the mail packet. The applicant will also receive a new membership card with an assigned membership number.
The highest rating, that of PROFESSIONAL (P), is achieved when the applicant scores a PROFESSIONAL (P) rating on all five portions of the certification test. A lesser rating on any portion on any portion of the test qualifies the applicant for an INSTRUCTOR (I) or ASSOCIATE INSTRUCTOR (AI) rating. For applicants who do not successfully negotiate any of the five portions of the certification test will received a NON-TESTED (N) rating.
Applicants may attempt to retest any portion of the certification exam only after a 60-day waiting period. The applicant can also not retake any portion of the test more than twice within a 12 month period (beginning after the original test was taken). Many PTR members who retest prepare by repeating the Teaching Essentials Certification Workshop.
To become a member of the PTR, there is a one-time non-refundable course fee, which covers the cost of a PTR Instructor’s Manual/DVD, testing fee and processing fee. The course fee will include the first year’s dues. Every PTR member will receive an annual statement regarding renewal of dues in the subsequent year of membership.
Note: The PTR membership year is from January 1 through December 31. If a membership lapses, there is a reinstatement fee to rejoin. If a lapsed membership is not renewed within a three year time period, the coach must retake the test to reinstate his or her certification status with the PTR.
All current PTR members will be listed in the Annual Membership Handbook published by the International Headquarters. The handbook is one of the most important publications a member will receive. It contains alphabetical and geographical listings of all PTR members worldwide and will serve as an invaluable source of reference including providing the contacts for all the PTR offices around the world, sponsors and affiliated organizations.
